How to Clean & Maintain Firefighter Turnout Gear | Complete Care Guide

Meta Description

Learn the professional ways to clean, wash, dry and store Nomex firefighter turnout suits. Correct maintenance extends service life and ensures fire safety performance.

How to Properly Clean and Maintain Your Firefighter Turnout Gear

Firefighter turnout gear is the most critical personal protective equipment for every firefighter. Made of high-performance Nomex, Aramid and Kevlar flame-retardant materials, the suit features fire resistance, heat insulation, waterproofing and tear resistance.
Professional cleaning and daily maintenance are not only related to wearing comfort, but also directly affect flame retardant performance, thermal protection and service life. Improper washing will damage the fabric structure, weaken flame retardant ability, and bring hidden dangers to personal safety.
This guide shares the standard cleaning, drying, storage and daily maintenance methods for firefighter turnout suits.

1. Important Pre-Washing Notes

  • Before cleaning, check the whole suit carefully: elbow and knee Kevlar reinforcement, 3M reflective strips, metal zippers, flame retardant Velcro and aramid stitching.
  • Remove all debris, dirt, dust and residual fire ground contaminants on the surface.
  • Take out name tags, inside pads and detachable knee/elbow pads separately for cleaning.
  • Do not wash together with ordinary work clothes; avoid mixing with sharp hard objects to prevent scratching the waterproof coating and PTFE moisture barrier layer.

2. Correct Cleaning Method

2.1 Hand Washing Recommendation (Best for Protection)

It is the most recommended way for high-grade Nomex fire suits.
  • Use neutral special flame retardant protective gear detergent only; never use strong alkaline detergent, bleach, disinfectant or fabric softener.
  • Soak in cold or lukewarm water (below 30°C) for 15–20 minutes.
  • Gently wipe and clean dirty areas; do not scrub hard to avoid damaging the outer fabric and PTFE waterproof membrane.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove residual detergent.

2.2 Machine Washing Rules

If using industrial professional washing machine:
  • Choose soft, gentle mode; low speed rotation.
  • Strictly control water temperature under 30°C.
  • Do not use high-speed dehydration, to prevent layer separation of moisture barrier and thermal barrier.
  • Household washing machine is not recommended for long-term use.

3. Standard Drying Method

  • Must use natural shade drying, avoid direct strong sunlight exposure for a long time.
  • Nomex and Aramid materials will age faster under long-time UV radiation; reflective strips will also fade and fall off.
  • Do not use high-temperature dryer, high-temperature ironing or baking.
  • Hang smoothly, do not wring or squeeze hard, keep the fabric and each protective layer flat.

4. Daily Maintenance & Storage Skills

  • After each fire mission, timely clean surface smoke dust, oil stains and chemical residues.
  • Regularly check 3M reflective strips, seams, zippers and pocket drainage holes. Keep drainage holes unobstructed.
  • Store in a dry, ventilated, cool environment, avoid humid, moldy and corrosive air.
  • Do not fold and press for a long time; hang with special clothes hanger to keep the suit shape.
  • Regularly inspect the waterproof and moisture permeability of PTFE barrier, replace accessories in time if aging or damaged.

5. Forbidden Operations to Avoid Damage

  1. Prohibit bleach, strong acid and alkali detergent.
  2. Prohibit high temperature washing, high temperature drying and sun exposure.
  3. Prohibit dry cleaning with chemical solvent.
  4. Do not pull or cut aramid sewing thread at will.
  5. Do not wear damaged, unwashed and contaminated fire suits to perform tasks.

6. Why Professional Maintenance Matters

Our firefighter turnout suits adopt 4-layer structure:
Outer layer (95% Nomex + Kevlar anti-static fabric) → PTFE waterproof moisture barrier → Aramid thermal barrier → Comfort inner layer.
Each layer has independent protective functions. Scientific cleaning and maintenance can keep flame retardancy, heat resistance, waterproof breathability and tear resistance stable, effectively prolong service life and protect firefighter personal safety.

Conclusion

Standard cleaning and daily maintenance are essential for firefighter turnout gear. Follow professional washing steps, avoid wrong operation, and regularly inspect and store properly, which can maximize the protective performance and service life of Nomex fire suits.
